Edward the confessor had promised both Harold and William "Bastard" of Normandy the seat of the throne before he died. Both men were distant relatives to the childless Edward the confessor. When William heard of it he quickly raised an army. In the summer the archbishop of Reims, Ebo accompanied by the monk Hatlingar and bishop Willerek of Bremen traveled to Hedeby to preach. They also wanted to negotiate a peace treaty between Harald and the two sons of Godfred, but no result was achieved either political or clerical.
